How to have impact without going broke

We’ve all been there: feeling overwhelmed by the need we see in the world while simultaneously feeling stretched thin financially. There are so many amazing causes and the need is greater than ever before. We’re also spending more than usual, whether it’d be for gifts or travel to finally see our families after a long time away. How can we balance our desire to give and have an impact with our financial and time constraints?

I’d love to encourage you.

You don’t have to spend any money to have impact. You don’t have to go broke keeping up with each charity your friend posts on Facebook. Below you’ll find a different way to think about impact and tools that’ll help you shape a plan for this holiday season and beyond.

Time

If you are someone who has the time to volunteer, that is a wonderful option! This could be working onsite at an organization or it could be mean working virtually/digitally. More hands make less work! Have littles at home with you? Make them a part of the fun!

Treasure

We can chose to spend our money or “Treasure” to have impact. Organizations always need cash or goods to help them execute their mission. If you do have the means this time of year, I’d encourage you to think through what TYPE of impact you’d rather have - spreading a little change to a lot of people or have a much bigger impact on fewer. Neither is right or wrong, just being intentional is key! Also, reach out to the organization and offer to set up a matching gift! This encourages others and is always exciting for any organization.

Talent

Are you a web designer? Are you an organization freak? Are you someone who is always connecting others? No matter what your talent is, it can be used to have real impact. Yes, using your talents from your day-to-day job is great but also think outside the box. If you’re a connector, pledge to spend an hour a week making introductions to spread the message and find more donors. If you’re a digital native who can churn websites out while you sleep, reach out and offer a website refresh or even a training for their staff on how to be more engaging online. Do you love cleaning out closets? See if a local organization needs their inventory room organized! There are countless ways to use your professional and personal talents to make change in this world!

Voice

Finally, after your Talent, Time, and Treasure —- we all have our voices. Our voice can be used speaking 1:1 with friends, presenting at a social club, speaking at church or even at Tuesday soccer practice. Our voice can be used online, via LinkedIn, social channels, or good ole’ email! Spreading the word about great work and impact is more than half the battle. Be a light by showing others organizations true to your heart.

Spend time this season thinking of ways you can have impact without feeling pressured or overwhelmed.

Now that we know different ways to have impact, let’s make a plan!

1) How can you give - without feeling overwhelmed, pressured, etc? (Time, Treasure, Talent, Voice)

2) List out causes that fill your cup (empowering women, education, feeding people, etc.)

3) Find organizations that are trusted in your local area, nationally, or internationally that align with your #2 list. (If you aren’t sure: ask your friends / network or check out things like GuideStar or Charity Watch or Charity Navigator)

4) Make a plan to commit! Reach out to the organizations you found above and offer your services and find out how you can best align with their needs.

Hope this was helpful and encouraging!

If you have questions, as a former fundraiser, I’m happy to help!
